Commercial Auto Insurance Requirements for Florida & Georgia Contractors
There are two sets of requirements every contractor has to satisfy: what the state legally requires, and what the people hiring you require. They are rarely the same number, and the second one is usually much higher.
Florida
Florida requires personal injury protection and property damage liability for registered vehicles, and commercial vehicles carry additional requirements depending on weight and use. Heavier trucks and for-hire vehicles fall under higher state-mandated limits. The practical takeaway for most contractors: the legal minimum is far below what a job site will accept, so pricing to the minimum is usually wasted effort.
Georgia
Georgia requires bodily injury and property damage liability on every registered vehicle, with higher limits for certain commercial and for-hire operations. Georgia also expects continuous coverage to be reported electronically, so a lapse can put your registration at risk quickly. As in Florida, the minimum keeps you legal on the road but won't get you through a general contractor's insurance review.
What general contractors actually ask for
- $1 million combined single limit on commercial auto is the common baseline.
- General liability alongside the auto policy, often at $1 million per occurrence.
- Additional insured status for the GC or property owner.
- A waiver of subrogation on some contracts.
- A certificate of insurance issued before your crew sets foot on the property.
If you cross state lines
Running between Florida and Georgia is common for our clients, and it's not a problem — but your policy needs to be written for it. Tell your agent your true operating radius. A policy rated for local work that's actually running interstate is the kind of mismatch a carrier will find after a loss, not before.
We're licensed in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, North Carolina, and South Carolina, with our deepest markets in Florida and Georgia. Send us the contract requirements you've been handed and we'll build a policy that clears them. Start with the free quote form on our home page.
